2026-06-20 20:17 Anything gratz garnin.
2026-06-20 19:41 Reptile some of those jobs were so mind numbingly boring, that you kinda got excited when stuff broke, b/c you got to troubleshoot
2026-06-20 19:39 Reptile dot matrix printers: I worked for a medical billing company in the mid-90s, and we used to print statements for doc offices - using.. dot matrix printers. we had to align the templates exactly - if the feed got messed up just a little bit, then the address wouldn't appear in the clear window for the envelope, and you'd have to restart that run where it messed up.
2026-06-20 19:36 Reptile oh it's atlanta, $50 is basically parking.
2026-06-20 19:36 Nartaka You should probably spend a little more on the date ;)
2026-06-20 19:36 Reptile I'll prob only get like $50-75 from those parts, but I mean.. it's currently just collecting dust - if someone can use it to keep their technical debt alive, and I can make enough for a dinner date w/ the wife - then why not?
2026-06-20 19:35 Anything dad ran the university library and was 10 or so heavy duty printers for students to print on.
2026-06-20 19:35 Anything theres a sound embedded in my brain from the old dot matrix
2026-06-20 19:34 Reptile there's some old hw out there that are still in use that folks find it's easier to replace than recode their workflows for new hw. I found an old ultra wide scsi controller and cheetah scsi drive that I Was gonna put on the market, there's still old manufacturing and stuff like that - that's using old stuff.
2026-06-20 19:32 Tiny bubble jet
2026-06-20 19:31 Boneitis Recently tossed a laser printer that had been in storage for about 9 years. Figured I wasn't going to suddenly need it.
2026-06-20 19:31 Boneitis I have been trying to clear out old basically useless computer parts.
2026-06-20 19:30 Boneitis Hah, nice. :)
2026-06-20 19:29 Reptile back when 512mb was a Big Deal (tm)
2026-06-20 19:28 Reptile oh, it's a Intel Mobile Pentium III 800MHz, and I found a 512MB Kit PC133 SDRAM - I guess it came from a laptop I had.
2026-06-20 19:27 Tiny tandy days oh yea
2026-06-20 19:26 Reptile oh man.. 486. I found an old cpu in my box of parts a few months ago. I used to hvae a spare 386dx, not sure what happened to it. also found a 56k modem and an ISDN router.
2026-06-20 19:24 Delyrium are we caring about people now?
2026-06-20 19:23 Boneitis Eh, delaying real life isn't necessarily a bad option.
2026-06-20 19:23 Delyrium ok you guys are freaking me out
2026-06-20 19:23 Reptile well yeah. hah. I mean, there's also a reason I was on the 6 year college plan instead of the typical 4.. I blame muds and my lack of motivation.
2026-06-20 19:22 Boneitis You probably showered before you saw her (mostly)
2026-06-20 19:22 Reptile ikr?! I had a gf at the time, and I'm not sure why she even put up with me.
2026-06-20 19:22 Boneitis The stereotypes exist for a reason :)
2026-06-20 19:21 Delyrium lol nice
2026-06-20 19:21 Reptile WAY too many nights, we'd basically stay there all night, no even shower - boxes of pizzas around us, and then just stumble to our first class.
2026-06-20 19:21 Boneitis *nod nod*
2026-06-20 19:21 Reptile from home, I would remote into the uni via a terminal program (terminate), log into the sparc, and then mud. but more often we were at uni, and would just snag an empty lab, and 4-5 of us would mud side by side from the telnet terminals. basically using the uni internet backbone to mud.
2026-06-20 19:20 Delyrium good times
2026-06-20 19:20 Delyrium good time
2026-06-20 19:20 Delyrium lol nice rep
2026-06-20 19:19 Reptile my 1st mud client was tintin running on the university sparc station that all compsci students had access to. I knew one of the admins for uni, and he had compiled tintin and dropped the binary in my homedir.
2026-06-20 19:19 Boneitis So learned TF, and that was that.
2026-06-20 19:19 Boneitis I started w/ zMUD on my Pentium 133 running Windows 95, but then acquired a 486 running Linux to put in my bedroom during high school.
2026-06-20 19:18 Delyrium then when mac os went unix shifted to tintin
2026-06-20 19:18 Delyrium i started with som e old mac only ones that arent around any more
2026-06-20 19:17 Reptile yeah. I used to use mcl client, which had a python and perl interp built in, but it's a dead project now. I used that client on toril for probably 15+ years. So then I went back to tintint as it was my very 1st client when I started mudding back in the 20th century.
2026-06-20 19:16 Delyrium tintin is like neo kinda hacker type muf
2026-06-20 19:16 Boneitis and gmcp :)
2026-06-20 19:15 Boneitis TF w/ built-in Python is very slick.
2026-06-20 19:15 Reptile tintin isn't as advanced, but you can open a mud session to a command, and it will think it's another mud session, so then you just read/write data from that session as if it's another mud, using triggers to send data back and forth to the main mud session.
2026-06-20 19:15 Delyrium 66 MGB
2026-06-20 19:14 Delyrium i had an old car like that
2026-06-20 19:14 Delyrium it's always the maintenance
2026-06-20 19:14 Boneitis At least now that all the tables have proper indexes on them
2026-06-20 19:13 Boneitis I use a persistent postgres connection object in Python, so it reads/writes sufficiently fast.
2026-06-20 19:13 Delyrium when your hobby is dominant you will be more happy
2026-06-20 19:12 Delyrium it's a battle right between the two
2026-06-20 19:12 Boneitis I'm pretty sure that's how Ebin has things set up. Sends things to a local server that does all the db stuff.
2026-06-20 19:12 Reptile at one point, I thought about using a message queue for logs / database events, but then when I started to research, it started to feel like a real job instead of a hobby.
2026-06-20 19:11 Delyrium my one, my precious
2026-06-20 19:10 Tiny geek squad talk
2026-06-20 19:10 Reptile beep boop
2026-06-20 19:10 Reptile all their logs are basically the same thing anyways
2026-06-20 19:10 Delyrium are you an AI?
2026-06-20 19:09 Reptile yeah. I turn off logging on mday for everyone except the main window (group leader) for that tmux session.
2026-06-20 19:09 Boneitis It's partly because my foreground world does logging of channels to my db, so I don't want multiple sessions running.
2026-06-20 19:08 Boneitis *nod nod* It's just a different a matter of preferences really.
2026-06-20 19:08 Reptile modified.. but it's diku
2026-06-20 19:08 Reptile this is diku
2026-06-20 19:08 Delyrium diku wow
2026-06-20 19:08 Jaeger and hayami does what i want :D
2026-06-20 19:08 Reptile ah. I haven't set my tintin sessions that way. probably should have, but I'm already down the rabbit hole with how I have the sessions.
2026-06-20 19:08 Jaeger i just basically do /oth command
2026-06-20 19:08 Boneitis And aliases like g1 to send all to diku.group1 worlds
2026-06-20 19:07 Boneitis So I have diku.group1, diku.group2, etc.
2026-06-20 19:07 Jaeger because my heroes dont need to level
2026-06-20 19:07 Jaeger and like, i never do mday on hero
2026-06-20 19:07 Boneitis TF has an option to have basically set world types, and then aliases/triggers that are bound to specific world types.
