| 2023-09-08 13:04 | Malaclypse | grin dojo |
| 2023-09-08 13:04 | Proserpina | work is invading lordchat, it feels wrong |
| 2023-09-08 13:04 | Demontwink | blink, fine time to pay attn to the lord convo |
| 2023-09-08 13:04 | Malaclypse | works well |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Malaclypse | where you just need to sequentially dump massive amounts |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Malaclypse | niche applications |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Malaclypse | oh yeah, there was a recent revivial iirc |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Dojo | they had a system that hadn't been updated and the guy that ran it had literally died a year ago. so they were SOL. nobody knew how to log in the thing. so we printed out a full guarantor report to a laptop via serial port pretending to be a printer, and then imported that to our database. |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Dojo | years ago I worked for a medical software company, and we had a small reagional doctor office contract us to replace their systems. they were rural, and basically the only dr office in a tri-county area. |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Quik | what about them 50TB tape cartridges |
| 2023-09-08 13:03 | Hydros | kzin pgems - last call |
| 2023-09-08 13:02 | Malaclypse | friend of mine was showing me some of the old floppy disks and tape backups they were still using |
| 2023-09-08 13:02 | Quik | $$$ |
| 2023-09-08 13:01 | Malaclypse | i guess reluctant to change things unless they really need to |
| 2023-09-08 13:01 | Dojo | yeah they are mala |
| 2023-09-08 13:00 | Hydros | pgems |
| 2023-09-08 13:00 | Malaclypse | hospitals/medicine in general is notorious for ancient IT stuff |
| 2023-09-08 13:00 | Malaclypse | grin |
| 2023-09-08 13:00 | Dojo | he contracts for them, and wanted me to be his "hit by a truck" insurance. I was like... man... I can't in good conscience take over that mess and pretend its ok |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Quik | I'm gonna have to approve adding mala to the TF repo, not sure about that guy |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Malaclypse | online perhaps? |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Malaclypse | cant remember - someone was doing a nice package for me to include with a release build |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Dojo | had a buddy contact me: hey, I need a backup for IT for a customer of mine.. a hospital. they have these MRI and xray machines, etc.. ran by some ancient version of windows.. like windows NT or something. they can't upgrade b/c the vendor is like, no no. you need new machines to get new software |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Malaclypse | grin |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Zaffer | Now... to TinyFugue ;) |
| 2023-09-08 12:59 | Zaffer | Nice :) |
| 2023-09-08 12:58 | Malaclypse | finally got mudlet compiling without errors |
| 2023-09-08 12:58 | Zaffer | Actually, forget easier/cheaper, it was *possible* |
| 2023-09-08 12:58 | Zaffer | *nod nod* That's why the abstract I referenced was to perfectly emulate the hardware. It was easier/cheaper than to rewrite the software for another platform. |
| 2023-09-08 12:57 | Dojo | prob is a lot of this stuff either (a) it's a black box of logic that nobody around knows how it works to rebuild it, or (b) it's super expesive to replace b/c it's so custom for their environment. replacement means 20-30m dollars to get all near gear, etc. |
| 2023-09-08 12:57 | Zaffer | *nod* I've seen places need specific versions of Panasonic Toughbooks w/ exact firmware installed to meet software QA requirements. Eventually you're just buying stuff from eBay and running enough testing on it to catch any issues. |
| 2023-09-08 12:57 | Quik | mm, multi zone failover with a RTO of < 15 seconds |
| 2023-09-08 12:55 | Dojo | had a customer running some email gateway that was "crucial" for their order intake process running software that went EOL about 15 years ago. they were buying stuff off ebay to keep it going. I was like.. ah.. guys. this is a timebomb of suck. you REALLY gotta get off of this. You pay now.. or pay later. but you will pay. |
| 2023-09-08 12:55 | Aino | byki should a massive slate-grey sledgehammer be autolotto |
| 2023-09-08 12:55 | Zaffer | Some fancy real-time processing. |
| 2023-09-08 12:54 | Dojo | wow.. that's scary and... so real. I see it all the time.. just for a thing so.. blowy-up-y |
| 2023-09-08 12:52 | Zaffer | p. 12 of https://inis.iaea.org/collection/NCLCollectionStore/_Public/39/008/39008903.pdf |
| 2023-09-08 12:52 | Dojo | also data for the cloud is like hotel california.. you can xfer it there for free.. all you want.. but to get it out? hahaha.. sorry. |
| 2023-09-08 12:50 | Zaffer | Hah, *nod* Those mainframes were very well engineered, and the software could be very robust. |
| 2023-09-08 12:50 | Dojo | had a customer look at moving off their Z mainframes to x86, then someone said, hey move it to the cloud. so they did this POC, and it all fell a part on the performance tests. apparently, to reach the same IO and transactions, they would need to spend about 5x more for the cloud x86 stuff than what they already had. |
| 2023-09-08 12:49 | Zaffer | I did get my manager to approve leasing a small server cluster for some work, so I have 8 VMs w/ 12 vCPU each and 128 GB of RAM, and IT gets to use the rest of the cluster for other things. |
| 2023-09-08 12:49 | Quik | not my fault our k8s deployments are massive |
| 2023-09-08 12:48 | Quik | IT has refused several times to increase the CPU and memory allocation to my tenant in openstack over the last 2 years |
| 2023-09-08 12:48 | Zaffer | I have the exact opposite problem. We're still using some OpenVMS 4.0 systems. |
| 2023-09-08 12:47 | Dojo | short term gain for long term pain |
| 2023-09-08 12:47 | Dojo | there are reasons to do these things, but I'd say most of the times, my custies don't do that analysis. they just get a hair brained idea and someone sells the a dream, and the executives tell them to do it. |
| 2023-09-08 12:47 | Quik | don't worry, we'll get bought by microsoft soon |
| 2023-09-08 12:46 | Zaffer | Better yet! Write a new system from scratch! |
| 2023-09-08 12:46 | Zaffer | *nod* Just make sure you try to tie it in to SAP too. |
| 2023-09-08 12:46 | Dojo | sounds like some consultants are gonna really enjoy that paycheck |
| 2023-09-08 12:46 | Zaffer | I'm glad I didn't go into software development/engineering. |
| 2023-09-08 12:45 | Quik | just wait until we move our entire massive jenkins infrastructure to github actions, that's gonna be great |
| 2023-09-08 12:44 | Zaffer | Something that *is* true... Don't try to be great at everything. |
| 2023-09-08 12:43 | Dojo | myth executives like to believe, but is false: moving to the cloud will save us a lot of money and is our primary reason for moving to the cloud |
| 2023-09-08 12:43 | Quik | "we're getting rid of our openstack cluster soon so you will need to deploy everything in azure" "quit using azure so much, it's getting expensive" |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Dojo | make sure you tie in all your cloud AD stuff to your onprem stuff, so you can have a seamless user experience of total suck |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Quik | so you know, it's true |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Quik | was complaining ab out M$ Azure :P |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Neilsen | omg, you said garbage |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Abbye | *cough* |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Quik | sry |
| 2023-09-08 12:41 | Dojo | *gasp* |
| 2023-09-08 12:40 | Quik | mc |
| 2023-09-08 12:40 | Quik | such a piece of fucking garbage |
| 2023-09-08 12:32 | Boneitis | Thanks for leading, Caree! |
| 2023-09-08 12:31 | Quik | you want a aziz crown? go buy it from rietta for 2 toenails |
| 2023-09-08 12:30 | Quik | maybe what we should do is make rietta sell more things |
| 2023-09-08 12:30 | Mythril | treasure should autoloot to |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Hayami | i need some shawls |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Hayami | oh yeah, we need to go to apoth |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Malaclypse | stuff should still drop though |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Malaclypse | basically scales chance inversely to group size |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Mizuno | nod i figured with bishop robes |
| 2023-09-08 12:21 | Malaclypse | autolotto already factors in multiday |
| 2023-09-08 12:20 | Mizuno | 2 |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Mythril | 5 like pgems would be nice |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Abbye | and replenished it in what, 1 mday? 2? |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Caree | how abt an autolotto npc? |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Mizuno | i know a few people who used up alot of gold on it |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Mizuno | mala's idea of transmog for gold was pretty good |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Mizuno | can i get a 4.5 |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Hayami | 4 |
| 2023-09-08 12:19 | Dojo | set it to 15 |
| 2023-09-08 12:18 | Mythril | should set a minimum group size for autolotto to happen as well |
| 2023-09-08 12:18 | Rar | yeah why spend the year having fun when you can instead powerfarm gold |
| 2023-09-08 12:18 | Mizuno | august should really be a menu of items for gold, buy one |
| 2023-09-08 12:18 | Hayami | or new timers with billions of gold |
| 2023-09-08 12:18 | Dojo | the gap between the casual player having almost no gold, and the old timers with billions of gold - is pretty large. |
| 2023-09-08 12:16 | Hayami | well, up until august |
| 2023-09-08 12:16 | Mizuno | if only there was a way to trade |
| 2023-09-08 12:16 | Hayami | you haave tons of gold |
| 2023-09-08 12:16 | Mizuno | yea i complain i hve no gold and tons of qp |
